Osprey around the Cairngorms
There's something special about these hunters. I've been watching and photographing osprey in this area for 4 years now and am always impressed by their hunting and flying skills. Osprey fly over to parts of the UK from West Africa for their breeding season. They're very attentive parents. Once the eggs are laid, it's mainly the female that stays with the eggs, apart from the odd break where the female will stretch her wings for a while as the male takes over, not without complaint. The male feeds the female by hunting fish and taking them back to the nest. En route he may stop for a break and eat part of the fish, saving half for his mate. When the eggs have hatched on the nest, the male has to increase his hunting flights to cater for the demands of the new hungry mouths.
These particular birds were all seen in the Aviemore area around the Rothiemurcus Fish Farm. They can be seen gliding toward the farm as they hunt fish there. The Cairngorm Mountains loom majestically in the background providing a picturesque background to the events as the hunt begins.
